Creative Junctions: Design Ping Pang Between the East and West

Update:2011-09-18

Overseas curators came to Beijing this month to coordinate the construction of the first BIDT exhibition. Each group of curators has their own exceptional ideas about the scenography and how to present their wonderful exhibits.

The sub-theme exhibition “Creative Junctions” boasts the largest floor area in the first BIDT. It is jointly planned by Gilda Bojardi, the chief planner of Milan Design Week and the editor in chief of INTERNI, and Yang Dongjiang, the associate professor of the Academy of Art & Design, Tsinghua University. “Creative Junctions” focuses on the junction between the most renowned designers and the most famous brands in the world. Audiences come to National Museum of China in October may not only have a look at the classic masterpieces by Alvar Aalto, Ettore Sottsass, Gio Ponti, and Tadao Ando, as well as the latest fine works of design stars such as Philippe Starck, Zaha Hadid, Jaime Hayon, Bouroullec Brothers, Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic, and Oki Sato, but may also learn a lot of about design brands. From seats to lamps, from tableware to beddings, most the exhibits are closely related to family life, fully presenting the spirit of this Triennial to serve the people and improve the living standard.

Up in the air of the exhibition area there will be thousands of Ping Pang ball hanging from the ceiling, which symbols the Design Ping Pang between the east and west. Besides this, the Italian curator group will construct 20 installations in the exhibition, which will interrupt the regular grid of the display platforms to create an effective sense of counterpoint, enriching the viewing layout to generate creative juxtapositions with respect to the design objects on view and the junctions they trigger. The installations consist of Alvar Aalto’s Stool 60, Gio Ponti’s Superleggera 699, Alessandro Mendini’s Il Cavallo di Venini, Andrea Branzi's Vertical Home, Zaha Hadid’s Z-Bowl, Philippe Starck’s Louis Ghost, FRONT’s Animals, Patricia Urquiola’s Waterdream, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec’s Clouds, Konstantin Grcic’s Chair One and MYTO, and so on.
